Darvaza Is A FREE Synchronized Tremolo/Gate Plugin By Igorski
Igorski releases Darvaza, a freeware tempo-synchronized tremolo/gate VST plugin for Windows and macOS.
Darvaza is a gate plugin with additional features that make it a surprisingly capable sound mangling tool. It can work as a standard tremolo effect or a completely chaotic gate effect that nearly reaches the glitch territory.
The plugin lets you apply multiple transformations to the gated signal, from modulation to playback speed changes, signal quality degradation, etc. It even includes a reverb effect with a “freeze” option that lets you capture a snapshot of the reverb signal.
Thanks to its extended feature set, Darvaza can do many things that a standard tremolo effect can’t. It’s more geared towards sound design experimentation than creating simple guitar-style tremolos and basic rhythmic gates.
Here’s how Igorski describes his latest software release:
“Darvaza is a multichannel gate with a twist: whenever the gate closes on your input signal, you get a perversion of your source spat back at you. It can, however, work as a time-synchronized classic tremolo too.”
The interface uses cryptic labels for the on-screen control parameters. This makes the first few encounters with Darvaza more fun if you’re feeling adventurous. Tweaking the knobs and discovering what each control does often leads to really cool sounds in my experience.
The developer states that “Darvaza’s UI is a little vague by intention. The plugin is aimed at sound design through experimentation and happy accidents.”
However, if you’re one of the precious few people who read their DAW’s manual cover to cover multiple times, Igorski provides a detailed guide on the product page.
Speaking of Igorski, he released a fantastic freeware bitcrusher plugin called HomeCorrupter last year. If you’re looking for a tool to degrade your audio signal, look no further than Igorski’s freeware plugin duo.
Darvaza is available in VST2 and VST3 plugin formats for digital audio workstations on Windows and macOS. Both 32-bit and 64-bit plugin hosts are supported.
A Linux build isn’t available for download at the moment, but you can compile one using the provided source code.
